As vibrant, vocal members of our community, we keep current on legislation, at the local, state and national levels.

Please contact your elected officials and oppose this bill.

Florida has one of the best worded religious freedom amendments in it’s constitution, even though it is not followed. We cannot allow this change to take place. In Fact, when you call or write, please ask them to ENFORCE this law rather than weaken or repeal it. You can find your elected officials below.

SJR 1218: Religious Freedom

JOINT RESOLUTION by Altman

Religious Freedom; Proposes an amendment to the State Constitution to provide that an individual may not be barred from participating in any public program because of choosing to use public benefits at a religious provider and to delete a prohibition against using public revenues in aid of any church, sect, or religious denomination or any sectarian institution.

You can cut and paste this letter or write your own, but please write or call them… or BOTH.
Dear ________
I urge you to vote against SJR 1218: Religious freedom Amendment change.  Florida has approx. 2 million citizens that have no religious beliefs and a large number of non-church going believers. This bill is unfair to all of them and to tax payers in general as it is our tax dollars that will be going to these institutions. A 2002 study shows that only 45% of Floridians are members of a church. I urge you to not only vote no, but to take measures to enforce the current law commonly referred to as the “No aid clause” or article 1, section 3, paragraph 2 of our State Constitution that currently treats all Floridians as equals and does not show partiality to church members. Churches should be paid for by it’s members and the portion of churches considered to be “non-profits” should be treated the same as any other non-profit.
Thank you,

Be an Atheist Activist in 30 Minutes A Week

VJACK at The Atheist Revolution offers some fantastic, simple tips on how you can be active and make your voice heard in his article “Be an Atheist Active in 30 Minutes a Week“.

Some of his suggestions include:

Vote up good atheist-related material on Digg, Reddit, and/or StumbleUpon. This helps others find it.

Take action on relevant action alerts you receive. This is typically as simply as making a phone call, signing an on-line petition, or sending a letter to an elected official.

Write letters to the editor of your local newspaper. See below.

Learn who your elected officials are, how they vote on issues of importance to atheists, and how to contact them.

Give blood. (Wearing a FLASH shirt might even provoke some conversation!)
