James, since you used the word "honestly", if one continually asks Superman to reveal himself, and is patient, wouldn't the results be the same? If you attribute the events to the unrevealed Superman then the belief is for exactly the same reasons. You just WANT or need to believe despite a lack of evidence or in denial of existing evidence.

I am often challenged with exactly what you suggest in your post. So let's be honest again, would you be willing to do the same experiment for me? Don't pray, go to church, read a bible (unless you read it cover to cover in the same light as you would any other book that claims the truth) and live as if there wasn't a god. You might realize that everything that happens, good or bad is a result of your actions or a naturally explained reason.

If, by "living as if there is no god" means you think it is OK to kill, injure, steal and so on, then religion is not the issue, you're just an asshole. Ethical and social behavior are not exclusive to christians or any other group of people.

The point is, if I pray to my dog, the results are the same as you praying to a god. The answer to our prayers is either yes (if it happens soon after), no (if it doesn't) or "be patient" if it happens a year or two from now.

Does my dog have mystical powers? No, nor does your god. one thing though... Wiggles, my dachshund can be seen, heard, touched and smelled, no one ever doubts his existence.

Nice try and thanks for playing.
